You’re late. Again.

Finally! What took you so long?

At last, you decided to honor us with your presence.

If you ever ran late anywhere, chances are you’ve heard one of these answers or variations of it. Negative variations. Especially if you’re the type of person that the Universe often decides to trip, and things happen to you frequently forcing you to be late, you’ve heard it all. But did it help you? Did it make you feel better?

I thought so.

So, why would you do the same when you happen to be the one waiting?

Here’s my suggestion. Next time you bump into someone who ran late, don’t serve them the same answers you’ve been served before. Try something different. Unexpected.

I’m happy you’re here.

That’s it. If you want, you could also add an “Are you OK?”. But nothing more.

Can you imagine their surprise?

Saying something positive when you’re expected to do the opposite will instantly defuse the tension. And if you give it a good thought, there’s really no reason to say anything caustic.
