My experience has been somewhat different, Kaylyn! And I've been on both sides, as a writer and as an editor. Each editor has their own standards that, coupled with the ones of the publication, could make the process more and less of a back and forth. I've encountered many editors who publish without too many requests. As for the ones who were asking changes, they were usually changes that indeed made the story better or clearer. My number one reason for self-publishing is the convenience of doing it anytime and the ability to keep a predictive publishing schedule.
